Contenu de la publication: Dans le cadre du séminaire interdisciplinaire Microplastiques et Méduses – expéditions poétiques en H₂O dirigé par Roman Kroke et Henning Wehmeyer, des étudiants de l’Université des Arts de Berlin (UdK) et de l’Université Technique de Berlin (TU) ont entrepris ensemble une mission de voyage dans treize laboratoires scientifiques à travers l’Allemagne spécialisés dans la recherche sur les plastiques dans les environnements aquatiques. Les étudiants provenaient de diverses disciplines (communication visuelle, beaux-arts, biotechnologie, ingénierie environnementale, architecture, communication dans des contextes sociaux et économiques, programme de formation des enseignants). Sur la base de leurs voyages de recherche, les étudiants ont développé des œuvres d’art hybrides qui ont été exposées lors du festival international The Universal Sea – Pure or Plastic ?! à Budapest (HUN), 2018. Le projet a été soutenu par l’Hybrid Plattform de l’UdK et de la TU qui sert l’échange transdisciplinaire de l’art, de la science et de la technologie.

À la suite de ce projet, Roman Kroke a été mandaté par le Centre Helmholtz pour la Recherche environnementale (Leipzig/DE) pour accompagner l’expédition scientifique SO 268/3 sur le navire de recherche SONNE traversant l’océan Pacifique de Vancouver (Canada) à Singapour (mai-juillet 2019).

Depuis son lancement en 2017, le projet pilote Microplastiques et Méduses – Expéditions poétiques dans H₂O a rencontré l’attention internationale de divers domaines : science, éducation, philosophie, art et architecture. Roman Kroke l’a notamment présenté à la conférence de la Rufford Foundation Enhancing Biodiversity Conservation in the Philippines (2020, Manille/PHL), au Musée d’art contemporain de Vojvodina (2019, Novi Sad/SRB), à un colloque interdisciplinaire sur le changement climatique, organisé par l’institut d’architecture OCRA (2019, Montalcino/IT), à la conférence scientifique MICRO 2018 – Fate and Impact of Microplastics : Knowledge, Actions and Solutions (2018, Lanzarote/ESP) et au siège de l’UNESCO dans le cadre d’une conférence sur les pratiques philosophiques en éducation (2018, Paris/FR).

Roman Kroke a également adapté le concept pédagogique pour les élèves au niveau scolaire, là encore en échange avec des instituts scientifiques : Il a notamment animé des ateliers intergénérationnels sur la pollution plastique des milieux marins pour un groupe mixte d’élèves et d’enseignants de Suisse, de la Réunion et des îles Shetland dans le cadre du programme Erasmus+ de l’Union européenne (2019, Genève/CH). Le Département F.-A. Forel pour les sciences environnementales et aquatiques (Université de Genève/CH) a mis à disposition des objets issus de ses laboratoires qui ont servi de matériel artistique pour cet atelier (2019, Genève/CH). Une approche similaire a été utilisée pour un atelier Kroke’s à l’Université de Bordeaux (FR) où des scientifiques du colloque EcoBIM (un réseau international de chercheurs, d’acteurs économiques ainsi que culturels dans le domaine de l’écotoxicologie en milieu aquatique avec un axe transatlantique) ont échangé des objets et une expertise avec un groupe mixte d’étudiants provenant de quatre écoles différentes.

PRIX ENVIRONNEMENTAL : En novembre 2021, l’atelier en partenariat avec le centre Helmholtz de l’UFZ pour la recherche environnementale, le lycée Louise-Otto-Peters et la station forestière d’Alluvial (tous à Leipzig/Allemagne) a été distingué par le prix environnemental « eku – ZUKUNFTSPREIS 2021″ (2.500 €), décerné par le ministère d’État saxon pour l’énergie, la protection du climat, l’environnement et l’agriculture.

Artistic project sketches (photos, videos, artistic materials, Readymades) of his current reserach stay in the Philippines. It includes in particular a visit to the research site of the Philippine NGO LAMAVE in Southern Leyte devoted to the study of whalesharks; whalesharks belong to the filter-feeding marine megafauna and are directly affected by microplastic pollution of the oceans. Exchange with the local scientists, freediving study with whalesharks in accordance with principles of eco-tourism.

Microplastics and Chameleons – poetic expeditions into H₂O and climate change

How may experimental storytelling nourish and revitalise mankind’s bond towards everyday objects and the environment we live in thus fostering concepts of ecological consciousness and sustainable development? In 2019, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (Leipzig/Germany) mandated Roman Kroke to accompany an international collective of scientists as an artistic mediator during their expedition on the research vessel SONNE crossing the Pacific Ocean from Vancouver/Canada to Singapore (May-July 2019). Resonating with the working universes of the scientists – plastic pollution of the oceans and aerosols/greenhouse gases – Kroke’s research has been devoted to three classical elements of Greek philosophy: earth, water and air. In pursuit of the above key question, Kroke’s focus consisted in exploring metaphorical transformations linked to the poetry of plastic and earth-water-air interfaces. In his lecture and exhibition he will present his current research universe – a work in progress – displaying sketches, photos, videos, sound-fragments as well as diverse materials produced in the course of the expedition. In this context, he will also provide an insight into the research following the cruise during which he further deepened his exploration of cross-border pioneering between the elements air, water and earth through freediving training in the Philippines.

Dans cette exposition collective, Roman Kroke a présenté son art multimédia (work in process) – dessins, installations, readymades – basé sur sa traversée de l’océan Pacifique à bord du navire de recherche allemand SONNE, de Vancouver à Singapour.
