Fleury-Mérogis Prison, nearby Paris (France)

Roman Kroke leads a one-week interdisciplinary artworkshop with detainees of the Fleury-Mérogis Prison (France). On behalf of the organisation LIRE C’EST VIVRE Kroke has developed a workshop-concept especially designed for the milieu carceral, where the participants explore the metaphors of the “book” and the “library”, inspired by the  short story “The Book of Sand” (Spanish: El libro de arena) by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986). The artworks will afterwards be presented in exhibitions outside the prison – in addition, they will be part of a cooperation with students of the School Charles Péguy (France).

With more than 4000 prisoners, Fleury-Mérogis is Europe’s largest prison, located in the southern suburbs of Paris. The prison received  particular attention within the context of the latest terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo – background information on the Fleury-Mérogis Prison:
